Music

At Lathallan we inspire both developing and talented performers to enhance their musical knowledge and talents, while offering them to opportunity to showcase their music on stage.

In S1 and S2 all pupils are given the opportunity to develop as musicians as they learn about performance, composition, and music literacy.

As performers, pupils will be given introductory instrumental tuition. With these skills, pupils will take part in group performances of popular and well-known songs.

To complement their skills as instrumentalists, pupils will engage in class discussions and activities using recognised musical vocabulary and concepts.

Pupils are encouraged to apply their knowledge and experience to create original compositions in a variety of musical styles, ranging from blues to traditional to contemporary.

Music and Music Technology are offered as Nat 5 subject choices to pupils in S3 and S4, building on the skills and experiences gained during S1 and S2, with an enhanced degree of personal choice.

Pupils will continue to develop as instrumentalists, specialising in two instruments (including voice) and working towards a minimum performance standard of Grade Three.

More advanced musical concepts will be discussed as part of both courses, and pupils will be encouraged to develop their voice as composers, incorporating the use of computer software and hardware.

In S5 and S6, pupils can study Higher or Advanced Higher Music and Higher Music Technology.

Each course option will challenge pupils to demonstrate their developing musicianship in all areas of study: Instrumental skills will be of Grade 4 standard for Higher and Grade 5 for Advanced Higher.

Listening and analysis activities will prepare pupils for written examinations of literacy skills and a composition portfolio which demonstrates more advanced knowledge and understanding of concepts is also be presented at this stage.
