Geography
In Geography at Lathallan pupils develop a detailed understanding of the contemporary world and aspects of concern to all citizens.
Pupils studying Nat 5 Geography learn about Physical Environments, such as glaciated and coastal landscapes, along with weather and climate.
We make full use of our unique location, just 200 metres from the North Sea, to deliver these lessons and many pupils who visited Iceland in 2019 learned first-hand about glaciers.
As part of the Human Environments Unit, pupils study examples of economically more and less developed countries, analysing population, development, housing, rural change and farming.
With an on-site school farm, pupils are ideally situated to learn about many of these topics and an annual field trip to Glasgow helps pupils to contextualise the main differences between the rural and urban landscapes.
At Higher level, pupils knowledge base of Physical Environments is further developed as they learn about energy transfer in the atmosphere, flood hydrographs, glaciation and coasts and soils.
Higher pupils extend their learning on population, rural and urban life while tackling a global issue on Development and Health and River Basin Management.
Field trips, such as one made to Kindrogan in 2018, give pupils experience of handling and analysing data while conducting investigations into in soil characteristics, downstream river change, river velocity and freshwater habitats.
